As most adult men are required to stay back in Ukraine, most of those fleeing the country are women and children. These packages will be given to Ukrainians at airports upon their arrival. Greeting them with care packages gives them one less thing to worry about so that they can more quickly recover from their long journey to Canada.

Canada is the country with the third largest population of Ukrainians, third to none another than Ukraine and Russia. With the amount of relatives and connections in Canada, the government is expecting thousands and has pledged to take as many as it can.

To expedite immigration procedures into Canada, the federal government has only committed to offering temporary resident status to Ukrainian nationals. Unfortunately, this means that currently Ukrainians will not be able to receive the usual suite of services offered to refugees or people applying to become permanent residents including federally-funded settlement programs such as English language classes, employment assistance programs, and childcare services.

Many Ukrainians cannot speak English and so they may face challenges finding these items on their own at Canadian stores when already facing the uncertainty of housing and the reality of having been forced to leave many of their male relatives behind.
